Baseball Defeats Utah Valley, 4-1, to Win WAC Weekend Series

CHICAGO – The Chicago State baseball team won its first Western Athletic Conference series of the season after defeating visiting Utah Valley by a score of 4-1 this afternoon at Cougar Stadium.

UVU broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning for a 1-0 lead when Skyler Davis hit a one-out double to left field and later crossed home plate after Trevor Howell drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded. Junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) blasted a solo home run to right field, his fourth of the season, for the home team in the bottom of the stanza to even the score at 1-1.

The score stayed the same until the fourth inning when the Cougars started their offensive end with senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) hitting a leadoff single and fellow senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) walked on the next play before junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant) hit his first home run in a CSU uniform with a three-run shot to right field off Kaden Schmitt to give the Green and White the lead for good.

Chicago State's defense was bolstered after the second inning through solid pitching from seniors Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) and Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) en route to capturing the win.

Heidenthal finished the game hitting 1-for-2 with three RBI and Lowe batted 1-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Cougars. Thomas allowed an unearned run on four hits and struck out four batters through four innings. Gutierrez then came in to strike out six and walking a batter in five scoreless relief innings to nail the win and improve his season record to 3-1.

The Green and White return to action on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference contest at Purdue live on the Big Ten Network Plus with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m.
