CSU Baseball Posts 4-3 Comeback Victory over Utah Valley

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball posted an exciting comeback today at Cougar Stadium in the second game of this weekend's home series against Western Athletic Conference foe Utah Valley after coming back from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 4-3 win.

The visitors opened the game with a two-out, solo home run from Trevor Peterson for an early 1-0 advantage after the first inning. UVU extended its lead to 3-0 after adding a pair of unearned runs through two Cougar throwing errors in the third inning.

CSU got on the board in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to slice its deficit to 3-2 when senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) lined a two-run single that brought home junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) from third and fellow senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) from second.

Junior Daulton Ryans (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) tied the score at 3-3 in the sixth thanks to a pinch-hit RBI single that landed into right field which scored junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) from third base. Lowe led off the inning with a double to left center and moved to third on a single from junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) before Ryans went to bat.

The score stayed the same until the bottom of the ninth with Freund drawing a one-out walk and stole second two plays later before Vanitvelt belted a single that brought him home for the game-winning run.

Vanitvelt led the Cougars as he batted 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI and Lowe finished the day hitting 2-for-4 with a double. Junior starter Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond) (1-2) earned a complete-game win as he struck out four batters while allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits.

The final game of the series between CSU and UVU will take place tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
