Cougars Edged Out by Utah Valley in WAC Series Opener, 1-0

CHICAGO – The Chicago State baseball team opened its weekend Western Athletic Conference series at Cougar Stadium today against Utah Valley with a tight defensive battle before the visiting Wolverines edged out the Cougars for the victory by a 1-0 margin.

The battle between CSU and UVU was a pitcher's duel between starters Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) and Jake Mayer which lasted for eight innings.

UVU loaded the bases in the top of the ninth before an attempted double steal was thwarted by the Cougars before the runner at third base crossed home plate to score the game's lone run.

Junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant) led the Green and White offensively as he batted 2-for-3 while senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) hit 2-for-4 at the plate.

Cumming (1-7) took the loss after giving up a run on six hits over 8.1 innings of work to go along with striking out six batters. Junior Yunis Halim (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) recorded two strikeouts to close out the ninth inning in relief of Cumming.

Both teams will play the second game of the series from Cougar Stadium tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
