Missouri Edges Chicago State in Close Baseball Battle, 5-3

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Chicago State baseball had three of its players post multi-hit efforts in a close contest here Tuesday evening at Taylor Stadium against host Missouri as the Tigers claimed a 5-3 victory.

The Green and White got on the board with a 1-0 lead in the first inning after senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) led off with a double and scored two plays later on an RBI infield groundout from fellow senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista).

Mizzou took its first advantage of the contest in the third inning at 2-1 thanks to a two-run home run by Trey Harris to left field.

Paciello began the top of the fourth for CSU with a leadoff single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a single by junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) before scoring the tying run on an RBI single from junior Daulton Ryans (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) to knot the score at 2-2.

The Tigers reclaimed the lead at 4-2 after scoring a pair of runs through a couple of Cougar defensive errors in the bottom half of the fourth and hiked their advantage to 5-2 in the fifth inning when Chris Cornelius drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded.

In the eighth inning, Paciello blasted a double to start the inning and crossed home plate a couple of plays later via an RBI groundout from Cox to pull within 5-3, but the home team held on defensively in the final two innings to seal the win.

Paciello finished the game hitting 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice to lead the Green and White, while Ryans hit 2-for-2 and Cox went 2-for-4.

Junior starter Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond) took the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits to go along with four strikeouts over 3.2 innings thrown. Junior Yunis Halim (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) and freshman Blake Kaplan (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista) fared well in relief by combining to allow two hits in three scoreless innings.

The Cougars return to Cougar Stadium this weekend for a Western Athletic Conference series against Utah Valley which begins Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
