Baseball Finishes WAC Weekend Series at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Chicago State baseball finished off its weekend Western Athletic Conference series Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Fieldwith a 12-4 defeat to host New Mexico State.
 
Logan Ehnes hit an RBI single in the first inning to bring home Logan Bottrell from third to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
 
A two-run single from junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) through the left side of the infield handed the visiting Cougars their first lead of the contest at 2-1 in the top of the third, but NM State tallied four runs in the bottom half of the stanza to recapture a 5-2 advantage which was highlighted by a three-run home run by Trey Stine.
 
Junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) led off the fourth inning with a walk and later scored on an Aggie fielding error to bring CSU within 5-3. Lowe blasted a leadoff triple in the fifth inning and came home on the next play via an RBI groundout from senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) which drew the Green and White within a run at 5-4.
 
The home team increased its lead to 10-4 after bringing home five runs in the sixth and capped the scoring in the eighth with two more runs.
 
Lowe ended the game hitting 3-for-5 and two RBI, while fellow junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) hit 3-for-4 on the day for the Cougars. Senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) (1-6) allowed five runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of work in taking the loss to go along with four strikeouts and walked three. Senior reliever Grant Trower (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) held NM State to a hit over 1.1 scoreless innings thrown.
 
CSU concludes its short road swing on Tuesday afternoon with a mid-week contest at Missouri live on the SEC Network Plus with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m.
