Paciello’s 3-for-5 Effort Leads Chicago State in 12-7 Loss at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) batted 3-for-5 with three RBI and a double to lead visiting Chicago State today as it fell to host New Mexico State, 12-7, in the second game of this weekend's Western Athletic Conference series at Presley Askew Field.

CSU broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third by scoring three runs to gain a 3-0 lead as it took advantage of three NMSU errors. The host Aggies gained their first lead of the contest in the bottom half of the inning after tallying six runs for a 6-3 lead which included a bases-clearing, three-RBI triple from Caleb Henderson.

The Cougars sliced their deficit to 6-5 in the fourth inning thanks to a two-RBI double from Paciello which brought home fellow senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) from first base and junior Zach Bailey (Janesville, Wis./Parker) from second.

NM State hiked its lead to 7-5 in the fifth inning when Marcus Still lined an RBI single to center field to score Tristen Carranza from third after he was hit by a pitch to reach base three plays earlier.

The Green and White plated two more runs in the sixth inning to even the score at 7-7 that began with senior Brandon Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) getting hit by a pitch and later scored on Vanitvelt's RBI double to right field. After moving to third on a passed ball, Vanitvelt crossed home plate on an RBI single to center field from Paciello.

The Aggies scored two runs in the seventh on a two-run homer from Nick Gonzales to retake a 9-7 lead and added three more runs in the eighth for the final margin.

In addition to Paciello, Vanitvelt finished the game hitting 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, and junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) hit 2-for-5 and drove in a run. Senior Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) fell to 2-1 on the season after he gave up three runs on three hits in 4.1 relief innings.

The Cougars and the Aggies close the series with another WAC Digital Network broadcast tomorrow afternoon starting at 1 p.m.
