Baseball Falls to Milwaukee in Non-Conference Home Contest

CHICAGO – The Chicago State baseball team took a break from the road this afternoon as it battled in a non-conference contest at Cougar Stadium against Milwaukee before dropping a 12-4 decision to the visiting Panthers.

CSU opened the game with an early 2-0 lead in the first inning that started with an RBI single from junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) which scored senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) from second base. Junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant) followed up on the next play with an RBI fielder's choice to plate senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista).

Milwaukee tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning on Mike Ferri's two-run double to left center off Cougar freshman reliever Blake Kaplan (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista) that also scored Joe Vyskocil.

Vyskocil struck again in the fourth with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to score Matt Quartel, who reached base via a one-out single three plays earlier, to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. He later drove home three more runs for the Panthers in the sixth after blasting a home run to left field to increase their advantage to 6-2.

After UWM added a run in the seventh and a run in the top of the eighth to bring its lead to 8-2, Chicago State sliced its deficit to 8-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the eighth. Paciello lined an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score freshman C.J. Breen (Livonia, Mich./Divine Child) from third base, while Lowe brought home senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) from third base on the next play with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field.

The Panthers then tallied four runs in the ninth inning to close out the scoring.

Paciello finished the game hitting 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead CSU offensively. Junior relief pitcher Dean Youngblood (Melissa, Texas/Melissa) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits through three innings of work.

The Cougars head to New Mexico this weekend to compete in a three-game Western Athletic Conference series against host New Mexico State in Las Cruces. The first game of the series will take place this Friday night starting at 7 p.m.
