Baseball Falls at City Rival UIC in Series Opener, 4-3

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball found itself in a battle at city rival UIC in the first game of a three-game weekend series at Curtis Granderson Stadium today before falling to the Flames by a close score of 4-3.

The home team broke a scoreless tie in the second inning with four runs to take an early 4-0 lead which included a solo home run from Bowen Ogata.

A solo homer by junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) put CSU on the board in the fourth inning to slice its deficit to 4-1.

Senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) lined an RBI single through the left side of the infield which scored fellow senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) from third base to pull the Green and White within 4-2 in the fifth inning.

In the ninth inning, junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant) was hit by a pitch and scored two plays later on an RBI single by senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) down the left field line to close within a run. CSU had an opportunity to tie the game with two outs before a fielder's choice forced the third out to end the game.

Freund batted 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Cougars at the plate. Freshman Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) recorded eight strikeouts in eight innings thrown but allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits in taking the loss.

CSU returns to Granderson Stadium for the second game of the series with UIC tomorrow afternoon live on ESPN 3 beginning at 1 p.m.
