UIC Uses Fourth-Inning Rally to Post 4-0 Win over Chicago State

CHICAGO – Host UIC used a four-run rally in the fourth inning to claim its second victory over Chicago State in this weekend's series by posting a 4-0 win today at Curtis Granderson Stadium.

The game was a scoreless defensive battle between the two teams with CSU senior starter Grant Trower (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and UIC starter Ryan Campbell dueling on the mound for the first three innings.

A two-run single from Scott Ota served as the highlight for the Flames during their scoring rally in the fourth.

The Cougars held a 6-5 advantage in hitting for the contest with senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) and junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) each batting 2-for-4. Trower (0-3) took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits in four innings thrown. Senior Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) struck out four batters in two relief innings and freshman Blake Kaplan (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista) also threw two scoreless innings in relief.

Ota paced UIC with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate and drove in a pair of runs, while Campbell threw a complete-game victory with three strikeouts over nine innings.

Both teams close out the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. with another live broadcast on ESPN 3.
