Baseball Closes UIC Series with Close 2-1 Defeat

CHICAGO – Chicago State closed out its weekend baseball series here today at Curtis Granderson Stadium with a close 2-1 defeat against host UIC.

Junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) gave the Green and White an early 1-0 advantage in the second inning after hitting an RBI single to right field that brought home fellow junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) from third after he led off the stanza with a single.

The Flames evened the score at 1-1 in the seventh inning when David Becker belted a leadoff triple to right center and crossed home plate on the next play via an RBI sacrifice fly from Joshua Figueroa to right field.

Scott Ota opened the eighth inning for UIC with a single and advanced to third on Alex Dee's single before scoring on a wild pitch for the winning run.

Lowe led CSU offensively by hitting 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior starting pitcher Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) was effective for the Cougars on the mound as he posted six strikeouts and walked three despite allowing a run on four hits in seven innings thrown for a no-decision. Junior reliever Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond) took the loss after giving up a run on two hits in the eighth while recording a strikeout.

The Green and White head to Orlando next week for a three-game series at No. 23 UCF to close out a season-opening 16-game road swing which begins on Friday, March 16 at 5:30 p.m.
