Cougars Swept by Seattle in WAC Home Doubleheader

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball closed out its first Western Athletic Conference home series of the season today at Cougar Stadium after falling twice to visiting Seattle by scores of 13-1 in the first game and 10-0 in the second contest.

Game 1 – Seattle 13, Chicago State 1 (7 inn.)
The visitors broke a scoreless tie in the second inning with a six-run rally to gain a 6-0 lead which was highlighted by a three-RBI double from Lucas Denney.

SU received an RBI double from Austin Lively and an RBI single from Sean Sutton in the top of the third to increase its advantage to 8-0. Junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) put the Green and White on the board in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI triple to right field which brought home senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry), who doubled on the previous play, to pull within 8-1.

A solo home run in the fourth inning by Chase Wells put the Redhawks ahead by a 9-1 margin.

In the sixth inning, Seattle tallied four extra runs to close out the scoring with Dalton Hurd lining a two-RBI single as the highlight of the stanza.

Lowe, Freund and freshman Reggie Brock, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) each recorded a hit for the Cougars, while junior Edward Kang (Taoyuan, Taiwan/Pingzhen) (1-2) took the loss on the mound when he gave up five runs on two hits through 1.2 innings of work.

Game 2 – Seattle 10, Chicago State 0 (7 inn.)
Sutton recorded an RBI single to left field in the first inning of the second game which scored Lively to post an early 1-0 lead for Seattle.

After increasing their lead to 3-0 with two runs in the third inning, the Redhawks tallied five runs in the fourth to bring their leading margin to 8-0 which included Curtis Perrin blasting a grand slam to right field.

Jake Cosgrove belted a two-RBI single to center field that plated Lively and Kyler Murphy to end the scoring for the visitors.

Juniors Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant) and Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) batted 1-for-2, respectively, to lead CSU. Senior Grant Trower (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) (0-4) allowed three runs on five hits in three innings of work to take the loss. Junior relievers Joe Baier (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) and Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond) each threw a scoreless inning with Fitka tallying three strikeouts in the seventh inning.
