Grand Canyon Defeats Chicago State at Home, 13-5

PHOENIX – The Chicago State baseball team was defeated by host Grand Canyon in the second game of this weekend's Western Athletic Conference series today by a 13-5 margin at GCU Ballpark.
 
The Green and White broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third with three runs to post a 3-0 lead which included an RBI single from junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) and an RBI sacrifice bunt by senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West). GCU came back in the bottom half of the inning with six runs of its own in capturing a 6-3 lead.
 
Junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) pulled CSU to within 6-4 in the fifth inning after hitting his team-leading third home run of the season with a solo shot to left field. The Lopes outscored the Cougars by a 7-1 margin from the sixth to eighth innings to close the scoring.
 
Lowe paced the Cougars at the plate today by going 3-for-3, while junior Dean Youngblood (Melissa, Texas/Melissa) allowed six runs on five hits in 1.1 relief innings in taking the loss.
 
CSU and GCU will battle in the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
