Grand Canyon Captures WAC Series Finale over Chicago State

PHOENIX – Chicago State closed out its inaugural Western Athletic Conference series of the season here today at GCU Ballpark with an 11-2 loss to host Grand Canyon.

The Green and White got on the board first after pushing a couple of runs past the plate in the second inning for a 2-0 advantage. Senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) led off the inning with a double to center field before scoring on the next play through an RBI single from fellow senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc). CSU later loaded the bases before junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) drew an RBI walk which plated fellow junior Daulton Ryans (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) from third.

GCU sliced its deficit to 2-1 in the third inning when Austin Bull lined an RBI single down the right field line to score Kona Quiggle, who recorded a triple on the previous play.

In the eighth inning, the 'Lopes tallied 10 runs which included a two-run double from Marc Mumper and a two-RBI triple by Zach Malis.

Junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) led CSU offensively by hitting 2-for-3 followed by Vanitvelt batting 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) (1-4) took the loss after he gave up four runs on nine hits over seven innings of work while also recording six strikeouts.

The Cougars open a four-game homestand this week at Cougar Stadium this Tuesday afternoon with a local non-conference contest against Northwestern with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
