Chicago State Suffers Close 3-2 Loss at Grand Canyon in WAC Opener

PHOENIX – Chicago State baseball opened its Western Athletic Conference slate here tonight at GCU Ballpark after it lost a close battle to host Grand Canyon by a 3-2 decision.

CSU claimed the early 2-0 lead in the first inning as junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) blasted a two-run home run with two outs off GCU starting pitcher Jake Wong that also scored fellow junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) from second. Zunkel reached base via a one-out double down the right field line two plays earlier.

In the third inning, the Antelopes recorded three runs to gain a 3-2 advantage which included a two-run single from Ian Evans.

The Cougars were paced by Zunkel and senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) as both players batted 2-for-4 at the plate.

Freshman Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) gave up three runs on six hits over six innings thrown to take the loss on the mound, but recorded three strikeouts and walked three. Senior reliever Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) threw scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings for CSU.

The Green and White will battle GCU in the second game of this weekend's series tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
