Women’s Basketball Closes Homestand against Grand Canyon

CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball saw its short weekend homestand come to a close here this afternoon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center with a 59-43 defeat to Western Athletic Conference foe Grand Canyon in conference showdown.
 
The first quarter opened with both teams battling through two lead changes and two ties before GCU used a quick 7-2 run over four-minute span to gain a 12-7 advantage with 3:03 remaining in the stanza.
 
CSU would go on to earn 17 of the next 30 points scored in a 13-plus minute stretch in between the first and second quarters to pull within a point at 25-24 going into halftime. Grand Canyon rallied to take the second half by a 34-19 margin that included a 19-8 third-quarter advantage to gain the win.
 
The Cougars held advantages over GCU in rebounds (34-22), blocked shots (4-1) and second chance points (7-3) for the contest.
 
Bowers finished with a team-high 17 points while going 5-for-6 from the free throw line and 2-for-3 from three-point range for the Green and White. Redshirt sophomore Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points and four assists, while redshirt senior Phylicia Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) added nine points and five rebounds.
 
Jessica Gajewski led all scorers with 25 points on 10-for-17 shooting for the Lopes.
 
Chicago State begins its final road swing of the season on Thursday afternoon at Utah Valley in a live broadcast on the WAC Digital Network with the opening tip set for 12 Noon.
