Johnson Posts Career Scoring High as Cougars Fall at Home to UTRGV

CHICAGO – Redshirt senior Phylicia Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) tallied a career-high 23 points in leading the Chicago State women's basketball team as it dropped a 69-62 decision to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley here this afternoon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
Johnson connected on 8-of-17 from the field and hit 6-of-7 from the free throw line while adding three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 38 minutes of play for the Green and White.
 
The Cougars jumped out to a 14-10 advantage after the first quarter and held a slim 14-13 margin in the second quarter to head into halftime with a 28-23 lead. UTRGV then outscored the Cougars by a 46-34 margin over the third and fourth quarters to solidify the comeback victory.
 
Senior Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) finished the game with 12 points and shot 4-of-8 from the field in addition to grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.
 
Redshirt sophomore Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain) recorded her seventh double-double of the season after posting a game-high 11 rebounds and scored 10 points. She also contributed game highs of six assists, five steals and two blocked shots for the Cougars.
 
The Vaqueros had three players score in double figures with Krisynthia Sampson leading the way with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
 
CSU finishes off its regular season slate on March 3 with Senior Day against WAC foe UMKC beginning at 1 p.m.
