Harris Scores 21 Points to Lead CSU in 63-55 Home Defeat to NMSU

CHICAGO – Redshirt senior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from three-point range to lead the Chicago State women's basketball team as it fell to visiting New Mexico State at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center by a score of 63-55 in the first game of a three-game, season-ending homestand.
 
CSU opened an early 6-0 lead on a Konnor Harris three-pointer at the 8:11 mark and later increased its lead to 10-4 at 6:52 following a layup from senior Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor). The visitors then went on an 11-3 scoring run in a span of 6:20 to claim a 15-13 advantage after Jasmine Cooper scored on a layup with 30 seconds remaining before redshirt sophomore Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain) drained a jumper before the buzzer to close the quarter with a 15-15 tie.
 
Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) would tally 12 points on four made threes as part of a 14-2 scoring run which lasted four minutes and 16 seconds as the Green and White reclaimed a 29-17 lead at the 5:44 mark of the second quarter. A jumper from redshirt senior Phylicia Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) increased CSU's advantage to 33-23 with 2:48 to go in the stanza before going into halftime with a 33-27 lead.
 
The Cougars started the third quarter with a quick 7-2 run in the opening 2:32 to claim their largest lead of the contest at 40-29 at 7:28, but NM State went on an 18-4 run of its own in seven minutes to regain a 47-44 lead at the end of the quarter.
 
The visitors began the fourth quarter by scoring 13 of the first 19 points in six and a half minutes to increase its advantage to 60-50 with 2:18 left before the Cougars scored five unanswered to pull within 60-55 just a minute later. NMSU went on to shoot three of four from the line to seal the win.
 
Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) added 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and four steals, while freshman Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) contributed 11 points and Johnson dished out a career-high seven assists for the Green and White. Mata Boix finished the contest with a game-high four blocked shots.
 
Brooke Salas tallied 17 points to lead the Aggies followed by Jasmine Cooper's double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Chicago State returns to action on Saturday afternoon against UT Rio Grande Valley starting at 2 p.m.
