Thomas’ Two-Way Play Helps Cougars Defeat LIU Brooklyn, 12-3

LEXINGTON, S.C. – Senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) was well effective both on the mound and at the plate in leading Chicago State baseball to a 12-3 victory over LIU Brooklyn this morning in the finale of a three-game series here at Lexington County Stadium.

The Cougars started the game with a 4-0 lead in the first inning with senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) and junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) each hitting an RBI double.

LIU Brooklyn came back to pull with a run at 4-3 thanks to a two-run home runs from Edward Modica, Jr. in the second and a Dom Paiotti solo homer in the third.

Six runs crossed the plate for CSU in the fifth inning which included a three-RBI, bases-clearing double from junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant) to hike its leading margin to 10-3. Thomas, senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) and junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) would also record RBI singles during the rally for the Green and White.

Paciello struck again in the seventh inning as he lined a two-run double that scored Heidenthal and Thomas to complete the scoring.
