Baseball Opens Snowbird Classic with 9-5 Win over St. Bonaventure

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Chicago State baseball opened the Snowbird Classic with a 9-5 victory over St. Bonaventure at North Charlotte Regional Park for its second consecutive win.
 
SBU began the scoring in the first inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead highlighted by an RBI single from Ben MacDonald off Cougar starting pitcher Edward Kang (Taoyuan, Taiwan/Pingzhen). The Green and White loaded the bases on three walks in the second inning before senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) was hit by a pitch that plated junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) from third to pull within 2-1.
 
An RBI sacrifice fly by Tyler Kelder brought home another run in the top of the third as the Bonnies increased their lead to 3-1, but a solo home run by junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) highlighted a two-run rally in the bottom half of the inning for CSU as it tied the score at 3-3.
 
The Cougars took their first lead of the contest in the fourth inning at 4-3 following an RBI single from Cox that brought home Freund and later added four runs to increased their lead to 8-3in the sixth inning.
 
The Bonnies scored two runs in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Casey Vincent and a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly from Jake Miknis to slice their deficit to 8-5. Cox opened the eighth inning for CSU by reaching base on a fielding error and later scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by fellow junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant) to close the scoring.
 
Lowe finished the game hitting 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs to lead Chicago State offensively, while junior Daulton Ryans (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) batted 3-for-5 with an RBI.
 
Senior Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) struck out a career-high six batters through four innings in relief of Kang to earn his first collegiate win. Junior Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond) allowed a hit in two relief innings to produce his second save of the season.
 
The Cougars return to action tomorrow with a pair of contests against Mount St. Mary's at 10 a.m. and Minnesota at 2:30 p.m.
