Paciello Records Two Hits in CSU’s 8-3 Defeat to LIU Brooklyn

LEXINGTON, S.C. – Senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) produced two hits in leading the Chicago State baseball team during Saturday's 8-3 loss LIU Brooklyn at Lexington County Stadium in the second game of this weekend's season-opening series.

LIU broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with four runs, including a two-run home run from Andrew Turner to post a 4-0 lead and Turner homered again in the fifth to help increase the lead to 6-0.  A solo homer from Anthony Warneke hiked the Blackbirds' advantage to 7-0 after the sixth inning.

The Green and White got on the board in the top of the eighth with a three-run rally which included Paciello hitting a two-run homer to left field that also brought home junior Jon Coss III (Richmond, Texas/Reagan) to pull within 7-3, but LIU added a run in the bottom half of the inning to complete the scoring.

Paciello finished the game batting 2-for-3 and added a stolen base, while Coss and junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) each recorded a hit. Senior Grant Trower (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits in five innings thrown in his season debut on the mound to take the loss. Junior Dean Youngblood (Melissa, Texas/Melissa) struck out four batters and walked two in three relief innings for CSU.

LIU was led by Turner, who finished 4-for-5 with two home runs and a double. Patrick Clyne recorded the win as he recorded seven strikeouts and walked four in five innings of work.

Both teams will close out the series on Sunday morning with the third and final game at 9:30 a.m.
