Baseball Posts Dominant 12-2 Win over LIU Brooklyn in 2018 Opener

LEXINGTON, S.C. – Chicago State baseball opened its 2018 slate in dominant fashion as it produced a 12-2 victory over LIU Brooklyn here Friday evening at Lexington County Stadium.

The first four innings were scoreless as both teams' defenses and pitching shut each other down.

That changed in the fifth inning when CSU scored three times to claim an early 3-0 lead that included junior Zach Bailey (Janesville, Wis./Parker) belting a two-RBI single and senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) drawing an RBI bases loaded walk.

Two runs crossed the plate for the Blackbirds in the top of the sixth to slice their deficit to 3-2 before the Cougars added three more runs in the bottom half of the inning by taking advantage of two errors. CSU sealed the game in the eighth by scoring six more runs, highlighted by a grand slam from Freund to right field.

Junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) batted 4-for-5 and scored three runs in his first game as a Cougar, while senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) finished the game hitting 3-for-4 and crossed the plate three times.

On the mound, junior Edward Kang (Taoyuan, Taiwan/Pingzhen) allowed a run over five innings thrown and posted three strikeouts to earn the win. Fellow junior Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond) captured his first save in a CSU uniform after striking out six in four innings of relief while giving up a run and a hit.

The Cougars and the Blackbirds return to the field on Saturday night at 7 p.m. for the second game of the series.
