Women’s Basketball Finishes Second Leg of Road Swing at Seattle

SEATTLE – Chicago State women's basketball finished the second leg of its three-game road swing here this evening as host Seattle captured a 72-60 win in a Western Athletic Conference battle at the Connolly Complex.

The Redhawks opened the first quarter with an early 9-4 lead over a six-minute span, but a three-pointer from redshirt senior Phylicia Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) at the 3:22 mark pulled the Green and White to within 9-7. SU then closed the stanza by scoring five unanswered points down the stretch to gain a 14-7 advantage and later used a 14-8 second quarter to go into intermission with a 28-15 lead.

The Cougars would use a 31-24 run in a 17-plus minute span between the third and fourth quarters to slice their deficit to 52-46 with 3:58 left in the final stanza following a layup from redshirt sophomore Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain). CSU would get no closer than six for the remainder of the game.

Johnson finished the game with 19 points to lead Chicago State, while freshman Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) shot 7-of-14 from the field and added 18 points. Mata Boix contributed 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Seattle had four players score in double figures with Jacinta Beckley leading all scorers with 23 points.

The Green and White head to Kansas City on Feb. 17 to end their road swing when they battle UMKC in a WAC contest beginning at 1 p.m.
