Mata Boix Posts Double-Double as CSU Falls at Loyola

CHICAGO – Junior Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain/) recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 rebounds and 10 points as the Chicago State women's basketball team fell to host Loyola at Gentile Arena tonight by a score of 76-40.

Mata Boix shot 5-of-9 from the field while adding two blocked shots and a steal in 40 minutes of play for the Cougars.

The visitors posted an early 4-2 lead at 8:06 of the first quarter on a baseline jumper from Mata Boix, but Loyola would score eight unanswered points in a three-minute span to gain a 10-4 advantage with 5:09 remaining. CSU then tallied a quick 6-3 scoring run in two minutes to pull within 13-10 after sophomore Tamara Olverson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) converted a layup at the four-minute mark before the Ramblers tallied seven of the last nine points scored to end the stanza ahead by a 20-12 margin.

Chicago State used a 6-2 scoring run in the opening three minutes of the second quarter to slice its deficit to 22-18 with 6:43 left after freshman Kourtney Crane (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) hit a pair of free throws. The home team would increase its advantage to 33-20 with 20 seconds remaining thanks to an 11-2 run in six minutes before sophomore Alexa Blake (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) drained a last-second three-pointer to bring the halftime score to 33-23.

Loyola went on to outscore CSU by a 43-17 margin over the final two quarters to claim the victory.

Blake finished with six points on 2-of-4 shooting from three-point range, while sophomore Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) tied a career high with five assists.
