Bowers Ties Career High with 28 Points in Cougars’ Home Opener

CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's basketball team opened its home slate today for Homecoming here at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center as sophomore Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) tied her career scoring high with 28 points in a 67-58 defeat to visiting Evansville.
 
Bowers shot 12-of-22 from the field and hit all four of her attempts at the free throw line to go along with tying for game high honors with three steals and added three assists.
 
Both teams started the first quarter with seven lead changes and three ties in the opening six minutes before UE produced a 7-2 run in the last three and a half minutes to post a 19-12 advantage after 10 minutes.
 
The Green and White responded with a 10-3 run over a near five-minute stretch to even the score at 22 in the second quarter that ended with a layup from Bowers at the 5:27 mark. A 10-2 scoring drive in a span of 5:22 gave the Purple Aces a 32-24 lead, but freshman Taylor Robinson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) drained a three-pointer with two seconds left to pull CSU within 32-27 going into halftime.
 
Evansville opened the third quarter by tallying 13 of the first 21 points in seven minutes to post its biggest lead of the game at 47-35 following a layup from Tattena Hall at the three-minute mark.
 
The Cougars (0-2) regrouped to post a 16-4 run in a near nine-minute stretch to tie the game at 51 apiece with 6:09 left in the fourth quarter with Bowers scoring 14 of CSU's points during the run. The visitors would end the game with a 16-7 scoring drive in the final six minutes to claim the victory.
 
Robinson contributed 13 points for the Green and White, while junior Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain/) recorded a career high-tying six blocked shots and set another game high with 15 rebounds.
 
Kerri Gasper paced Evansville (1-1) with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Next up for Chicago State is a trip to Kentucky for the Vinewood Farm Classic in Morehead which begins on Friday, Nov. 16 against Saint Francis (Brooklyn) with a start time of 3 p.m.
