Wambere’s 17 Points Lead Four Cougars in Double Figures vs. SFC

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Freshman Shamim Wambere (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) recorded 17 points to lead four Chicago State women's basketball players in double figures as it fell to Saint Francis (Brooklyn) in the first game of the Vinewood Farm Classic here today at Johnson Arena on the campus of Morehead State.
 
Wambere shot 8-of-14 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds over 33 minutes of play for Chicago State (0-3).
 
CSU took an early 6-4 lead on a jumper by freshman Taylor Robinson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) at the 8:17 mark of the first quarter before SFC went on a 22-13 scoring drive over the last eight minutes to gain a 26-17 advantage. The Green and White posted a quick 10-6 run in a span of 3:31 to pull within three at 30-27 after junior Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain/) canned a jumper with 6:29 left in the second quarter, but a 20-12 run in six minutes helped the Terriers increase their lead to 50-39 at halftime.
 
The Cougars tallied 15 of the first 33 scored in the opening four minutes of the third quarter to pull within 58-54 at the 5:57 mark on a jumper from sophomore Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern). Saint Francis (Brooklyn) then went on a 20-4 run in a five-minute stretch to hike its lead to 78-58 with 1:48 left in the stanza and would cruise to victory in the fourth quarter.
 
Bowers added 13 points and four assists for CSU, while freshman Kourtney Crane (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) contributed 11 points on the day. Mata Boix produced game highs of nine rebounds and three blocked shots to go along with scoring 10 points.
 
The Terriers were led by Kate Bauhof, who scored a game-high 18 points to lead six players in double figures.
 
The Cougars continue the tournament tomorrow afternoon against host Morehead State live on ESPN+ with the opening tip set for 4:05 p.m., central time.
