Klavitter, Dela Cruz Help Cougars Post First Victory over UMKC in 14 Years

CHICAGO – Behind the play of junior Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) and senior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview), the Chicago State volleyball team concluded its three-match homestand this evening by defeating Kansas City in a thrilling five-set Western Athletic Conference match at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
The win snapped a 17-match losing streak to the Kangaroos and marked the first victory for the Green and White in the series with since Oct. 22, 2004 when they earned a five-set win at the Swinney Recreation Center in KC.
 
The Cougars captured the first two sets by close scores of 25-22 in the first set and 25-23 in the second set heading into intermission. UMKC took the third set via a 25-19 margin and sent the match into the final set after winning the fourth by a score of 26-24. CSU broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth set by scoring 12 of the next 20 points to earn the win.
 
Klavitter recorded a match-leading 30 digs to lead the Chicago State (8-14, 2-4) and pulled within three digs of breaking Mysta Townsell's Division I school career digs record of 1,314. She also finished with three assists and a service ace. Dela Cruz produced her ninth double-double of the season as she tallied 14 kills and 11 digs
 
Junior Kirah Williams-Shephard (Toronto, Canada/L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute) also notched 14 kills to set a new season-high total, while senior Ludmila Bomfim (Belo-Horizonte Minas Gerais, Brazil/Escola Estadual Pedro II) posted 29 assists and sophomore Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) dished out 26 assists. Junior Beatriz Palmieri (Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Professora Carlina Cacapava de Mello) produced 12 kills and 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the year.  
 
Melanie Brecka recorded a match-high 20 kills to lead UMKC (13-8, 4-3) in the contest.
 
The Cougars travel to Phoenix for a Saturday afternoon WAC battle at Grand Canyon with a start time of 5 p.m.
