Harris Leads Four CSU Players in Double Figure versus CSU Bakersfield

CHICAGO – Junior Anthony Harris (Gary, Ind./Griffith (Ind.)) tallied a season-high 20 points to lead four Chicago State men's basketball players in double figures, but the host Cougars fell to defending Western Athletic Conference champion CSU Bakersfield, 89-78, this afternoon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
CSU began the game with a 10-6 lead in the opening five minutes following a three-pointer from senior Montana Byrd (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) at the 14:36 mark and later took an 18-14 advantage on another three by Harris with 11:27 remaining in the first half. The Roadrunners then outscored the Cougars by an 18-8 margin in a span of five minutes to capture a 32-26 lead at the 7:22 mark.
 
After the Green and White scored seven unanswered points in less than three minutes to post a 33-32 lead with 4:46 left in the stanza on a layup from junior Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale), CSUB finished the half with a 12-7 scoring drive in the last 4:30 of the half to go into intermission ahead by a 45-40 margin.
 
In a nine-plus minute stretch to start the second half, the Cougars tallied 21 of the first 39 points scored to pull within 63-61 with 10:48 remaining after a tip-in off a missed shot by freshman Cameron Bowles (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood). CSUB increased its advantage to 80-66 following a 17-5 scoring run in a span of five minutes and CSU would get no closer than 11 points for the remainder of the contest.
 
Harris connected on 8-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range in 25 minutes off the bench for the Green and White. Redshirt senior Jelani Pruitt (Gary, Ind./Merrillville (Ind.)) added 13 points, Sims recorded 12 points and senior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) contributed 10 points.
 
Junior Rob Shaw (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) dished out a career-best eight assists and senior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) recorded seven assists for CSU.
 
Damiyne Durham recorded 14 points to lead six CSUB players in double figures while Brett Wrapp posted a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 10 assists.
 
CSU returns to action on Jan. 27 as it concludes its homestand against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with the opening tip set for 2:05 p.m.
