Cougars Defeat Western Illinois at EIU Classic Opener for Fourth Straight Win

Lauryn Dela Cruz posted a double-double of 24 kills and 14 digs in CSU's 3-1 win against Western Illinois

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Chicago State volleyball team made some history here tonight at Lantz Arena as it defeated Western Illinois in four sets at the Eastern Illinois Panther Classic to capture its fourth straight win to equal the school's Division I record for a winning streak.

The Cougars, who matched the 2004 CSU squad that produced a four-match win streak from Sept. 6-11, 2004, claimed the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 32-30 to go into intermission. After the Fighting Leathernecks posted a 26-24 third-set victory, the Green and White finished the match by earning a 25-13 win in the fourth set.

Chicago State had double-double efforts in the match from three players in juniors Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) and Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti), and freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central).

Dela Cruz recorded a match-leading 24 kills and added 14 digs, Carvajal finished with 23 kills and 16 digs, and Adams tallied her first collegiate double-double with a match-best 54 assists and 18 digs.

Sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) equaled her career high with 31 digs and freshman Summer Farris (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) finished the match with a team-best six blocks (two solo, four assisted) to lead CSU's defensive effort.

Emma Norris led WIU with 16 kills, while Shaylyn Greenshaw contributed a double-double of her own with 22 digs and 11 kills.

Chicago State concludes the classic tomorrow afternoon against host EIU at 1 p.m. and Alabama A&M beginning at 4 p.m.
