Cougars Fall in WAC Opener to CSU Bakersfield, 3-1

Lauryn Dela Cruz tallied a double-double of a match-high 17 kills and 14 digs in tonight's WAC opener against CSU Bakersfield

CHICAGO – The Chicago State volleyball team kicked off its Western Athletic Conference schedule tonight at the Jacoby Dickens Center with a 3-1 defeat to visiting CSU Bakersfield.

The Roadrunners captured a tightly-contested first set by a score of 27-25 before the home team evened the match at 1-1 going into intermission following a 25-23 victory in the second stanza. CSUB claimed the final two sets via scores of 25-17 and 25-20 for the win.

CSU (9-7, 0-1) received double-double efforts from three players – juniors Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) and Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti), and freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central).

Dela Cruz tallied a match-high 17 kills and contributed 14 digs, while Carvajal also posted 14 digs and 13 kills. Adams dished out a match-leading 34 assists to go along with 14 digs and two service aces.

Sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) paced the Green and White in digs with 21 and also notched a pair of service aces.

CSU Bakersfield (7-8, 1-0) were led by Emily Lopes (28 digs), Fabiana Andrade (27 assists) and Desiree Sukhov (13 kills).

The Cougars welcome Grand Canyon to the Dickens Center on Saturday, Sept. 23 in a WAC showdown that will start at 12 noon on the WAC Digital Network and the Chicago State Sports Network.
