Volleyball Post Split in First Day of UCR/CSF Tournament

Sophomore Megan Klavitter tallied a season-best 24 digs as CSU claimed a 3-2 win Friday night at Cal State Fullerton

RIVERSIDE & FULLERTON, Calif. – The Chicago State volleyball team managed to post a split on Friday during the first day of the UC Riverside/Cal State Fullerton Tournament.

CSU dropped a three-set decision (25-15, 26-24, 25-21) at UC Riverside before closing out the night with a thrilling five-set victory (25-14, 25-17, 20-25, 9-25, 15-10) at Cal State Fullerton.

Junior Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti) paced the Green and White with her fourth double-double of the season after recording a match-high 15 kills and tied for the team lead in digs with 11. Freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) dished out 32 assists, while sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) also tallied 11 digs and junior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) finished with eight kills.

The Highlanders (3-1) were led by Kaiulani Ahuna's match-high 15 kills and Chelsea Doyle finished with a match-leading 47 assists.

In the CSF match, Carvajal (14 kills, 14 digs) and Dela Cruz (17 digs, 14 kills) each posted double-doubles to lead the Cougars in a thrilling five-set battle. Adams and Klavitter recorded match highs with 43 assists and 24 digs, respectively.

The Highlanders (2-2) received a match-high 17 kills from Shimed Fayad.

CSU closes out the tournament tomorrow afternoon in Riverside, Calif., against Southern Utah beginning at 3 p.m., Central time.
