CSU Volleyball Closes UCR/CSF Tournament with 3-1 Win over Southern Utah

Megan Klavitter set a new career high for digs with 31 as CSU defeated Southern Utah in four sets today

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Chicago State volleyball closed out the UC Riverside/Cal State Fullerton Invitational on a good note Saturday afternoon after it defeated Southern Utah in four sets at SCR Arena on UCR's campus.

CSU claimed the first two sets by close scores of 25-23 and 25-20 before the Thunderbirds took set three via a 25-18 margin. The Green and White rebounded with another close win in the fourth set, 25-22, to end the match.

For the match, Chicago State held advantages over SUU in kills (59-50), assists (59-45), digs (73-53), service aces (9-1).

The Cougars were paced by juniors Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) and Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti) as both players produced double-doubles. Dela Cruz, the reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week, tallied a season-high 29 kills and added 11 digs, and Carvajal posted a season-best 21 kills with 11 digs and three service aces.

Freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) dished out a match-leading 51 assists and also recorded three service aces, while sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) produced a career-high 31 assists for CSU.

Macky Fifita and Janet Kalaniuvalu each produced 14 kills to lead the Thunderbirds (2-5), while Alexis Averett recorded 36 assists. Sarah Vang and McCail Evans led the SUU defense with 12 digs and 11 blocks, respectively.

Chicago State travels to Peoria, Ill., on Tuesday, Sept. 5 for its first mid-week match of the season at Bradley. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with a start time of 6 p.m.
