Volleyball Posts Split on First Day of Chicago State Invitational

CHICAGO – Hosting its first in-season tournament in three years, the Chicago State volleyball team posted a split on the first day of play Friday at the Chicago State Volleyball Invitational, held at the Jacoby Dickens Center.

The Green and White began the day with a 3-1 (17-25, 14-25, 25-22, 13-25) defeat to Louisiana in the second match of the tourney before coming back later in the evening to edge Eastern Michigan in a thrilling five-set match (25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13).

CSU were led in the Louisiana match by sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden)'s 18 digs, and another double-double from junior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) with 12 kills and 12 digs.

Freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) recorded 30 assists, senior Paige Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) finished with 11 kills and junior Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti) posted 10 kills.

Jessica Bartczyszyn dished out a match-leading 50 assists to lead the Ragin' Cajuns (5-6), who also received a pair of 13-kill efforts from Stacy Reilly and Dree'Ana Abram.

In the EMU match, Dela Cruz led the Cougars (8-5) with a season-best 29 kills as they came back from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two sets.

Carvajal recorded a double-double of 14 digs and 13 kills with Adams dishing out 43 assists and Klavitter posting 16 digs.

The Eagles (8-7) received strong offensive efforts from Franki Stribling (18 kills) and Mallory Rajewski (35 assists).

CSU closes out the tournament on Saturday with contests against Wright State at 12 noon and Southeast Missouri State at 4 p.m.
