CSU Volleyball Concludes WIU Leatherneck Invitational with Defeat to Host Western Illinois

Sophomore Megan Klavitter recorded a match-best four service aces for CSU today at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. – Chicago State volleyball concluded its season-opening weekend here this afternoon with a three-set defeat to host Western Illinois at the Hampton Inn Leatherneck Invitational, held at WIU's Western Hall.

The Leathernecks won the first and third sets by a close 26-24 margin while taking the second set by a score of 25-21. The match was pretty even statistical-wise as both teams recording 55 digs, 36 assists and 41 kills, but CSU held a 7-1 advantage in service aces and WIU took the total blocks lead via an 8-6 margin.

Junior Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti) led the Cougars (1-2) with a match-best 19 kills and added 14 digs for her third double-double of the weekend. Fellow classmate Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) also recorded a double-double for the third straight match after producing 15 digs and 11 kills.

Freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) nearly posted a double-double of her own as she dished out 32 assists and contributed nine digs while sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) posted a match-high four service aces and senior Paige Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) finished with three block assists.

Emma Norris paced WIU (2-0) with a double-double of 13 digs and 10 kills followed by Jaime Johnson dishing out a match-best 34 assists. Claire Grove tallied a match-leading 22 digs to lead the Leatherneck defense.

The Green and White head to California next week to compete in the UC Riverside/Cal State Fullerton Invitational that begins on Friday, Sept. 1 at UCR in Riverside, Calif. Start time for that match begins at 2 p.m., Central Time.
