Box Score
MACOMB, Ill. – Senior Paige Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) tallied a career-high 15 kills in leading the Chicago State volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) victory over Manhattan College in the season opener for both teams here today at the Hampton Inn Leatherneck Invitational at Western Hall.

Eyring posted a .355 hitting percentage (15-4-31) while adding six digs and a service ace for the Cougars, who won their season-opening match for the first time since 2014 when they claimed a five-set victory over North Carolina A&T in Terre Haute, Ind., on Aug. 29, 2014.

The Green and White started the first set with a 7-2 run that concluded on a kill from sophomore Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli). After the Jaspers pulled within three points at 11-8, CSU closed out the stanza via a 14-8 scoring drive with junior Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti) tallying four kills during that stretch which included knocking down the last three points.

Carvajal struck again in the second set as she posted five service points, including two aces, as the Cougars posted an early 5-0 advantage. Manhattan then tallied 10 of the next 16 points to slice its deficit to 11-10 on an Erin Horner service ace. The set then turned into a back and forth affair between both teams as there were four ties and four lead changes before the Jaspers scored three straight points to gain a 17-14 lead. Junior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) and Eyring each recorded three kills as part of an 11-5 run that gave the Green and White a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.

Manhattan jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the beginning of the third set on a CSU hitting error, but a 17-8 scoring run which included a pair of service aces from Dela Cruz and sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) pushed the Cougars ahead by an 18-12 margin that forced the Jaspers to call timeout. After Manhattan closed within 24-23 by tallying 11 of the next 17 points played, freshman Summer Farris (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) closed the match with a kill on the next play to give Chicago State the win.

Carvajal (11 digs, 10 kills) and Dela Cruz (12 kills, 10 digs) finished with a double-double in their first match in a CSU uniform. Freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) dished out a match-leading 38 assists and Klavitter notched a team-high 15 digs for the Green and White.

Alyssa Rehner posted a match-best 16 digs to lead Manhattan, while Taylor Halsey dished out 14 assists and Sandra Lozanova recorded six kills.

CSU returns to action later this afternoon as it faces off against Evansville with a start time of 3 p.m.
