Volleyball Closes First Day at Leatherneck Invite with 3-1 Loss to Evansville

Sophomore Alexandria Cliff tallied a match-best .500 hitting percentage against Evansville.

MACOMB, Ill. – Chicago State volleyball concluded its first day of competition here at the Hampton Inn Leatherneck Invitational at Western Hall after dropping a four-set decision to Evansville via scores of 25-21, 28-30, 25-18 and 25-23.

The Green and White held advantages over the Aces in assists (56-52) and digs (90-88), while UE were ahead in total blocks (7.0-3.0) and service aces (3-2). Both teams would go on to record 57 kills in the contest.

Junior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) recorded her second double-double of the day with match highs of 40 digs and 18 kills to lead CSU. Fellow junior Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti) also notched 12 kills and 11 digs to post her second double-double, while freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) dished out a match-leading 52 assists and sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) added 18 digs.

Sophomore Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) tallied a .500 hitting clip (10-1-18) and a team-best three block assists and senior Paige Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) finished with 11 kills, seven digs and two service aces for the Cougars.

Evansville was led by Cathy Schreiber's 14 kills, Allana McInnis' 48 assists and Cassie Brooks' 29 digs on the day.

CSU concludes the invitational tomorrow afternoon against host Western Illinois at 2 p.m.
