Several Cougars Post Big Efforts in Five-Set Home Battle against UTRGV

CHICAGO – Chicago State women's volleyball received big efforts from freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central), and juniors Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti) and Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) as it battled tough against Western Athletic Conference foe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley here tonight at the Jacoby Dickens Center in its annual Dig Pink match.

The Green and White opened the match with a close 25-21 victory in the first set before the visitors posted a 25-18 second set win to even the score at 1-1 going into intermission. CSU took the third set by a 25-19 margin, but the Vaqueros sent the contest into the deciding set by posting a 25-21 win in the fourth before ending the match with a 15-8 win.

Adams dished out a career-best 58 assists while posting a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage (5-0-5) for CSU (10-16, 1-9). Carvajal notched a team-leading 22 kills and 17 digs, and Dela Cruz contributed 16 kills and 13 digs.

Sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) finished with a match-high 22 digs, senior Paige Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) added 13 kills and sophomore Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) recorded 10 kills.

Bojana Mitrovic tallied a match-high 23 kills to lead UTRGV (13-9, 7-2).

The Cougars continue their four-match homestand on Saturday against New Mexico State with the first serve set for 12 p.m.
