Volleyball Opens WAC Western Road Swing with 3-1 Defeat at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – The Chicago State volleyball team opened its weekend Western Athletic Conference western road swing here tonight after being defeated by host Grand Canyon by a 3-1 margin at GCU Arena.

The Lopes won the first set by a thrilling score of 31-29 before claiming a 25-16 victory in the second set to go up 2-0 at intermission. After the Green and White took a 25-21 win in the third set, GCU closed out the match with a 25-13 win.

Junior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) posted her 13th double-double of the season to lead the Cougars with a match-leading 22 kills and 12 digs, while freshman Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) recorded a match-high 49 assists and 10 digs for her seventh double-double on the year.

Freshman Summer Farris (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) tallied a season-high 14 kills and added four block assists, and junior Carmen Carvajal (Lugo, Spain/I.E.S Lucus Augusti) added 13 kills and posted a match-best three service aces. Sophomore Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) led all players in digs with 15.

Grand Canyon was led by 15 kills from Natalie Tardy and also received 14 kills from Claire Kovensky.

CSU finishes off the weekend in California with a WAC contest at CSU Bakersfield this Saturday afternoon starting at 3 p.m.
