Four Players Score in Double Figures for CSU against CSU Bakersfield

CHICAGO – Four players scored in double figures for the Chicago State men's basketball team tonight as it battled CSU Bakersfield in a Western Athletic Conference showdown at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center. The visiting Roadrunners shot 48 percent from the field from the game to escape the JCC with a 74-59 victory.
 
CSUB (13-7, 4-1) shot 45 percent from the field and connected on 89 percent of its free throw attempts en route to claiming a 38-29 halftime lead. In the second half, the visitors outscored the Cougars by a 37-30 margin as it went on to shoot 50 percent from the field and forced the Green and White to hit only 33 percent of their field-goal attempts.
 
CSU would post a slim 27-23 advantage in bench points for the contest.
 
Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. led Chicago State (6-17, 1-5) with 15 points, while senior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) recorded his WAC-leading 12th double-double after scoring 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Sophomore Anthony Eaves (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) set a new season scoring high with 14 points and connected on four of his six three-point attempts, and freshman Patrick Szpir (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) scored a season-best 10 points.
 
Matt Smith led CSUB with game highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Jaylin Airington added 20 points.
 
The CSU men's and women's tennis teams at halftime honored the 1991-92 women's tennis team in a ceremony for finishing with a record of 20-0 to become the only African-American squad in NCAA Division I history to post an undefeated season.
 
The Cougars conclude their weekend homestand against Grand Canyon this Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m.
