Armando Posts 10 Kills in Volleyball’s 3-0 Loss to UMKC in WAC Opener

CHICAGO – Junior Juma Armando (Toronto, Canada/Archbishop Romero) tallied match highs of 10 kills and two service aces to pace Chicago State volleyball in its three-set loss here tonight to UMKC in its Western Athletic Conference opener at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
 
The visitors claimed an early 8-5 lead in the first set after CSU had three straight hitting errors and later posted an 11-8 advantage on another Cougar hitting miscue. The 'Roos took their biggest lead at 21-12 on an Adasia Bromberger service ace en route to posting a 25-19 win.
 
UMKC opened the second set with a 5-0 advantage following a kill from Mykal Sadler before CSU scored a quick 8-1 run to gain an 8-6 lead on a hitting error by the 'Roos. The Green and White later scored six of the next eight points that broke a 10-10 tie to record a 16-12 lead after junior Kelsey Taylor (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian School) posted a service ace. After a kill from freshman Sofia Gruden (Washburn, Ill./Metamora) put the home team ahead by an 18-16 margin, UMKC would tally seven of the set's final 13 points to earn the close 25-23 victory entering intermission.
 
Both teams began the third set by battling through 11 lead changes and nine ties before UMKC tallied six of the final eight points to break a 19-19 tie to close out the match
 
In addition to Armando, junior Corey Davis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) dished out 16 assists and Taylor produced 15 assists for the Green and White. Freshman Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) posted a match-high 12 digs, while junior Paige Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) finished with nine kills and senior Dzeni Hadzisehovic (Belgrade, Serbia/First Private School for Catering and Tourism) recorded eight kills. 
 
Kaylyn Brandt recorded a match-best 31 assists and added two service aces to lead UMKC (8-6, 1-0), while Devan Porter posted nine kills and Sadler recorded a match-leading five blocks (four assisted, one solo).
 
The Cougars (2-13, 0-1) hits the road next week for a pair of WAC matches out west beginning Sept. 29 at Utah Valley with a start time of 7 p.m., Mountain Time.
