This Week: Chicago State volleyball travels to Big 12 country this weekend as it heads to Lawrence, Kan., to compete in the four-team Kansas Invitational at the Horjesi Family Athletics Center. The Green and White will play twice on Friday against the fifth-ranked Jayhawks (12 p.m. – ESPN 3) and Arkansas (5 p.m.) before taking on Maryland this Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.

Scouting Chicago State: CSU enter this weekend's slate against Power Five competition after dropping all three of its matches last weekend at the Memphis Invitational to the host Tigers (3-0), Belmont (3-0) and Central Arkansas (3-1). Junior outside hitter Juma Armando (Toronto, Canada/Archbishop Romero) leads the Green and White in kills with 2.40 per set and is tied for the team lead in blocks with six (one solo, five assisted). Junior middle blocker Shedella Smith (Victorville, Calif./Hesperia) has posted a team-best .379 hitting percentage and six block assists, while junior setter Kelsey Taylor (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian School) is dishing out 3.80 assists a set and senior defensive specialist Kiana Chaney (Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek) has recorded a team-high four digs per set.

Scouting Kansas: Ranked fifth in the AVCA's preseason poll, Kansas enters the week with a 3-0 record on the season after winning the Mississippi State Bulldog Invitational last weekend via three-set victories over Eastern Washington, the host Bulldogs and Lamar. Junior right side hitter Kelsie Payne leads the Jayhawks with 3.33 kills per set, while junior outside hitter Madison Rigdon is averaging 2.78 kills a set to go along with a team-leading seven service aces. Senior middle blocker Tayler Soucie is tops on the team with 1.44 blocks per set, and junior setter Ainise Havili has posted team highs of 9.67 assists a set and a .587 hitting percentage.

Scouting Arkansas: Arkansas opened its 2016 season last weekend at the Illini Classic in Champaign, Ill., with losses to #14 Illinois (3-0), Missouri State (3-0) and Xavier (3-1). Senior outside hitter/middle blocker Danielle Hartin has produced a team-high 2.70 kills per set, while freshman setter Rachel Rippee leads the team with 5.70 assists a set and five service aces. Senior middle blocker Breana Jones has amassed a team-high seven blocks (six assisted, one solo – 0.70 bps) and sophomore libero/defensive specialist Okiana Valle leads the Razorbacks with three digs a set.

Scouting Maryland: Maryland brings a 3-0 record into Lawrence after posting three-set wins against Eastern Washington, Delaware State and Sacred Heart to claim the Maryland Invitational at the Xfinity Center. Freshman outside hitter Gia Milana is tops on the Terrapins with 3.78 kills a set and is tied with senior middle blocker Ashlyn MacGregor for the team lead in service aces with four. MacGregor, the reigning Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week, also leads the team in blocks with 2.33 per set. Sophomore defensive specialist/libero Kelsey Wicinski has produced an average of 4.44 digs per set.

Up Next: The Cougars continue their tournament slate in Alabama next weekend (Sept. 9-10) with the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational, hosted by Alabama State. CSU takes on Savannah State, Troy and the host Hornets.
