Volleyball Drops Season Opener at Memphis, 3-0

MEMPHIS – Chicago State volleyball opened its 2016 schedule early this afternoon by taking on host Memphis in the second match of the Memphis Invitational at Elma Rhone Fieldhouse. The Tigers earned a three-set sweep in the contest after winning via scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-13.
 
CSU started the match with an early 2-0 lead in first set on the serve of junior Corey Davis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) that included a service ace, but the Tigers would score a quick 8-4 run to gain a slim 8-6 advantage. After freshman Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) brought the visitors to a one-point deficit at 8-7 with a service ace, Memphis then concluded the set with a 17-7 scoring drive to capture a 1-0 lead.  
 
The second set saw both teams battle through 14 lead changes and 13 ties before UM broke a 17-17 tie with an 8-2 scoring drive to head into the break with a two-set advantage.
 
The Cougars then trailed 8-3 early in the third set before tallying eight of the next 10 points played to close within two points at 13-11 on a kill from junior Shedella Smith (Victorville, Calif./Hesperia). Memphis then posted a 13-2 run down the stretch to close out the match.
 
Smith led CSU with seven kills and five block assists, while junior Corey Davis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) tallied a double-double of 10 assists and tied for match-high honors with 10 digs.
 
McKenzie Hayes recorded a match-leading 13 kills and Regan Comperry dished out 32 assists to pace Memphis.
 
CSU returns to action later this afternoon for its second contest of the Memphis Invitational against Belmont with the first serve set for 5 p.m.
