EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Freshman Mariela Alba (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett) scored her first collegiate goal for visiting Chicago State women's soccer in its 2016 season opener here tonight, but host SIU Edwardsville would produce a 6-1 victory at Korte Stadium in a battle of the Cougars.

Alba, who posted three shots in the game, pulled the Green and White to within a goal at 2-1 in the 60th minute after tapping in a rebound off a shot from fellow freshman Taylor Rankin (Dearborn, Mich./Ford), who was credited with her first collegiate assist on the score.

SIUE (1-0) broke a scoreless tie in the first half with a pair of goals in the 18th and 34th minutes to go into halftime ahead by a 2-0 margin.

Following Alba's goal, the home team then tallied four scores in the 68th, 70th, 75th and 84th minutes to conclude the scoring.

Junior Gabby Klemp (Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) recorded seven saves in goal for the CSU Cougars during the first half.

Chicago State returns to the Windy City for its home opener at Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Stadium against Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon with the opening kickoff set for 1 p.m.
