This Week: The Chicago State University women's soccer team kicks off its 2016 season this weekend with a pair of contests versus in-state opponents. CSU heads downstate to Southern Illinois on Friday night at SIU Edwardsville in the season opener for both teams with the opening kickoff set for 8 p.m. Two days later, the Cougars start a three-game home slate at Kroc Stadium versus Western Illinois beginning at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Cougars: CSU heads into year three under head coach Tony Tommasi with 12 returning players from the 2015 squad with seven of those being starters. CSU also welcomes in 13 newcomers to the team as it looks to battle tough in the Western Athletic Conference while trying to earn a berth in the league's postseason tournament. The top returning scorer for the Green and White is sophomore midfielder Amber Jones (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute Country Day), who recorded a goal and an assist in her first collegiate campaign in 2015, while fellow classmate Audra Wisehart (Sandusky, Ohio/Huron) led all WAC goalkeepers with 113 saves.

Scouting the SIUE Cougars: SIUE welcomes back 18 players from last season as it posted a 5-11-3 season record and was picked to finish seventh in last week's Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll. Sophomore forward Caroline Hoefert recorded three goals a year ago and is the leading returning scorer for the Cougars. Senior defender Kassidy Rawdon earned 2015 Second Team All-OVC honors after starting all 19 contests as a junior.

SIUE History: Friday's game will be the second lifetime meeting between CSU and SIUE with the SIUE Cougars capturing a 7-0 decision at Kroc Stadium on Sept. 6, 2015.

Scouting the Fighting Leathernecks: Western Illinois enters its first year under head coach Dr. Eric Johnson at Indiana State on Friday night. WIU brings back 22 players from last season that includes six starters. WIU's top returner is junior midfielder Brianna Hughes, who recorded two goals and an assist in 17 games last season. The Fighting Leathernecks dropped a pair of exhibition contests nearly two weeks ago in preparation for the season against Valparaiso (L, 4-2) at home and at UMKC (L, 3-0).

WIU History: Sunday's contest marks the first-ever meeting between Chicago State and Western Illinois.

Up Next: CSU continues its three-game homestand at Kroc Stadium on Aug. 27 when it takes on Saint Xavier with the opening kickoff set for 1 p.m.
