Men’s Basketball Drops Close Decision at Saint Louis, 45-43

ST. LOUIS – The Chicago State men's basketball team completed its back-to-back weekend slate here today with as it dropped a close 45-43 decision to host Saint Louis at Chaifetz Arena despite coming back from a 10-point deficit midway through the second half.
 
The home team claimed a 5-2 lead in the 17:42 mark of the first half on a three-pointer from Mike Crawford before CSU scored eight of the next 10 points over a near seven-minute stretch to gain a 10-7 advantage following a layup from junior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) with 10:55 remaining in the half. SLU then scored 13 unanswered points in a span of five minutes to take its biggest lead of the contest at 20-10 with 4:32 left before the Cougars posted an 8-2 run in the final minutes to pull within four at 22-18 heading into halftime.
 
After Burns scored on a layup and a jumper within the opening four-plus minutes of the second half to slice CSU's deficit to 24-22 at the 15:36 mark, Saint Louis bounced back with a 19-11 scoring drive in five and a half minutes to post its biggest lead of the contest at 43-33 with 10 minutes left in the contest.
 
The Cougars (3-6) then used a 10-2 scoring drive in nine minutes to cut SLU's lead to 45-43 on a Palmer layup with 36 seconds remaining. After junior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) recorded a steal with nine seconds left to help the visitors hold serve defensively, Palmer had a chance to win the game with three seconds left, but his game-winning three-point attempt was blocked by Zeke Moore to seal the win.
 
Palmer tallied his second double-double of the weekend and third this season after producing game highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds to go along with dishing out a season high-tying three assists. Sophomore Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) contributed seven points, while Burns finished with six points, four rebounds and three assists.
 
Crawford paced SLU with 11 points and Elliott Welmer added 10 points. Jermaine Bishop recorded game highs of seven assists and three steals.
 
CSU returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 14 as it heads to Evanston, Ill., for a city showdown against Northwestern on the Big Ten Network with a start time of 6 p.m.
