Grand Canyon Defeats CSU Volleyball, 3-1, in WAC Battle

PHOENIX – The Chicago State volleyball team concluded the road portion of its 2016 schedule here this afternoon as it suffered a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 16-25) defeat in Western Athletic Conference play to host Grand Canyon at GCU Arena.

CSU (3-24, 1-11) was led by junior Juma Armando (Toronto, Canada/Archbishop Romero) as she tallied her third 20-kill effort in two weeks while hitting .325 on the day. She also added nine digs, two blocks (one solo, one assisted) and two assists in the match.

Senior Dzeni Hadzisehovic (Belgrade, Serbia/First Private School for Catering and Tourism) contributed 10 kills, while junior Kelsey Taylor (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian School) dished out 24 assists and fellow junior Corey Davis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) recorded 21 assists. Redshirt sophomore Brianna Stewart (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) posted eight kills and four block assists.

The Green and White's defense were paced by freshmen Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden), Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) and Sofia Gruden (Washburn, Ill./Metamora). Klavitter tallied a pair of match highs with 13 digs and two services aces, while Cliff and Gruden each produced five block assists.

The Lopes (5-19, 1-11) received 19 kills from Randahl Powers and 44 assists from Heidi Carpenter.

The Cougars close out the regular season next week at the Jacoby Dickens Center with their final two home matches beginning on Thursday, Nov. 10 against New Mexico State at 7 p.m.
