Volleyball Drops Thrilling Five-Set Match to WAC-Leading New Mexico State

CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball battled Western Athletic Conference-leading New Mexico State in a thrilling battle here tonight at the Jacoby Dickens Center, but the visiting Aggies earned the victory in five sets.

NM State posted a 25-18 win in the first set before the Cougars captured the second and third sets via scores of 25-21 and 25-23 to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. The Aggies rebounded with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set then earned a 15-9 win in the deciding set.

Junior Juma Armando (Toronto, Canada/Archbishop Romero) led CSU (3-25, 1-12) with a double-double of a match-high 20 kills to go along with 11 digs and a .375 hitting percentage. The double-double was Armando's third over the last three weeks.

Senior Dzeni Hadzisehovic (Belgrade, Serbia/First Private School for Catering and Tourism) and redshirt sophomore Brianna Stewart (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) each added seven kills, while junior Shedella Smith (Victorville, Calif./Hesperia) posted a match-best nine block assists and fellow junior Kelsey Taylor (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian School) dished out 19 assists.

Freshman Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) produced 18 digs and junior Thais Vieira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/ADN) recorded two service aces on the evening.

Tatyana Battle notched a double-double of her own with 19 kills and 13 digs to lead NM State (22-6, 12-1), who had four players finish with double-figure kill efforts.

Chicago State concludes the regular season on Saturday afternoon for Homecoming at the JDC against UT Rio Grande Valley with the first serve set for 12 p.m. Hadzisehovic and fellow senior Kiana Chaney (Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek) will be honored in a senior day ceremony prior to the match.
