Cougars Drop Tightly-Contested WAC Opener at New Mexico State, 2-1

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Chicago State women's soccer dropped a tightly-contested contest to host New Mexico State by a score of 2-1 to kick off Western Athletic Conference play this afternoon at the NMSU Soccer Athletic Complex.

Both teams battled through a scoreless draw through 71 minutes until the home team tallied the first goal in the 72nd minute after Aileen Galicia scored after receiving a pass from Gabby Campbell.

The Cougars (1-10, 0-1) evened the score at 1-1 in the 81st minute as freshman Makenzi Marier (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) recorded her first collegiate goal that was assisted by fellow freshman Mariela Alba (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett).

NM State (4-9, 1-0) regained the lead in the 89th minute when Adriana Tuti Tirado tallied the game-winning goal with the assist coming from Dominique Riviera for the final margin.

Freshman Taylor Rankin (Dearborn, Mich./Ford) tallied three shot attempts, including a shot on goal for CSU, while sophomore Audra Wisehart (Sandusky, Ohio/Huron) tallied a game-high 13 saves.

CSU returns to Kroc Stadium this Sunday afternoon for a WAC game against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with the opening kickoff set for 1 p.m.
