Volleyball Closes Home-Opening Weekend with 3-1 Defeat to Seattle

CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball closed out its home-opening weekend doubleheader today at the Jacoby Dickens Center after falling to visiting Seattle in a Western Athletic Conference contest by a 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 10-25, 15-25) margin.
 
After the Redhawks came from behind to capture the first set, CSU (1-14, 0-2) posted a .393 hitting percentage in the second set to even the score at 1-1 heading into intermission. Seattle (10-5, 2-0) responded with dominant efforts in the third and fourth sets for the win.
 
The Green and White were led by junior Elli Woinowsky (Berlin, Germany/Merian Oberschule), who produced a team-best 12 kills and two service aces in the contest.
 
Sophomore Corey Davis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) nearly tallied a double-double as she dished out a match-high 28 assists to go along with nine digs, and fellow sophomore Arieta Vaimaona (Lauli'i, American Samoa/Faga'itua) finished with nine kills. Redshirt freshman Brianna Stewart (Elgin, Illinois/Larkin High School) also contributed eight digs and seven kills for the Cougars.
 
Iris Ivanis recorded a double-double with match highs of 18 kills and 14 digs to lead Seattle, while Martina Samadan posted 16 kills, four blocks and three service aces.
 
CSU continues conference play on Thursday, Oct. 1 when it travels to Las Cruces, N.M. to battle New Mexico State with a start time of 7 p.m., Mountain Time.
