Cougars Drop 3-0 Decision to Utah Valley in Home Opener

Elli Woinowsky recorded a match-best 12 kills in CSU's WAC opener at home against Utah Valley

CHICAGO – The Chicago State volleyball team opened its Western Athletic Conference slate Thursday evening with a 3-0 (20-25, 18-25, 21-25) defeat to visiting Utah Valley at the Jacoby Dickens Center in its home opener.

Junior Elli Woinowsky (Berlin, Germany/Merian Oberschule) recorded a match-best 12 kills to lead CSU (1-13, 0-1), while sophomore Corey Davis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) dished out 24 assists to go along with six digs and five kills. Junior Melina Staengle (Sindelfingen, Germany/Schickhardtgymnasium) posted a match-leading 15 digs and added five kills of her own.

Junior Logan Miller (Palm Harbor, FL/Palm Harbor University) and redshirt freshman Brianna Stewart (Elgin, Illinois/Larkin High School) each produced three blocks defensively for the Green and White.

Utah Valley (5-8, 1-0) received 12 kills and five blocks from WAC Preseason Player of the Year Lauren Bakker and Sierra Starley posted a match-high 28 assists.

The Cougars close out their conference-opening homestand on Saturday afternoon against Seattle with the first serve set for 12 p.m.
