Volleyball Posts Split at ISU Classic, Gains First Win of 2015

Junior Elli Woinowsky earned all-tournament team honors at the ISU Classic on Saturday after recording 15 kills and 14 digs in CSU's 3-0 win over Western Illinois

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Chicago State volleyball team posted a split in its final two matches to conclude the ISU Classic today at Indiana State's ISU Arena.
 
CSU (1-12) began the day with a 3-0 (14-25, 20-25, 11-25) loss to the host Sycamores before earning its first win of the season with a 3-0 (25-19, 29-27, 26-24) win over longtime rival Western Illinois.
 
The Green and White were led in the Indiana State match by junior Elli Woinowsky (Berlin, Germany/Merian Oberschule), who produced eight kills and two service aces. Redshirt junior Jana Kunz (Olten, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Solothurn) finished with nine assists, five kills, and two block assists, while sophomore Corey Davis (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) contributed nine assists and seven digs and sophomore Arieta Vaimaona (Lauli'i, American Samoa/Faga'itua) tallied a match-leading four blocks (two solo, two assisted).
 
Bree Spangler recorded match highs 10 kills and nine digs to pace Indiana State (10-4).
 
Woinowsky posted a double-double versus WIU as she tallied a match-high 15 kills and 14 digs to go along with a .323 (15-5-31) hitting percentage en route to capturing all-tournament team accolades. Vaimaona added 10 kills and two solo blocks, Davis dished out 31 assists and sophomore Shontanae Addison (Little Elm, Texas/Wakeland) produced a match-best 19 digs.
 
The Fighting Leathernecks (2-11) received 14 kills from Peyton Crosser and a match-leading 34 assists from Abby Skryd.
 
"I'm happy with the way our team bounced back in the second match and our defense played really well. This win is a good way for us to head into conference play next week," CSU first-year head coach Brandon Reeves said.
 
CSU opens a two-match homestand at the Jacoby Dickens Center next week to begin Western Athletic Conference play beginning on Thursday evening against Utah Valley with a start time of 7 p.m.
